Arizona Scottsdale Missionary Survey

Here are survey responses from Arizona Scottsdale RMs, to give you a snapshot into what it’s like to live in the mission.

When did you serve?

  • October 2013- September 2015 (Ethan)
  • 2013-2015 (Sydney)

What areas did you serve in?

  • Paradise valley, Scottsdale, Tempe, Phoenix, Snowflake, Eagar (Sydney)

What were some favorite foods?

  • Pizza. Chicken and rice. Pastas. Lasagnas. Hawaiian hay stacks. (Ethan)
  • Anything healthy. We sometimes didn’t get fed the healthiest food- we were thankful for any food of course but sometimes it didn’t make our bodies feel too good, hahaha. (Sydney)

What was a funny experience?

  • When another elder and I re-created SpongeBob with a pineapple, a yellow box of Nerds, a blue bucket, a stale roll, a pink Jolly Rancher lollipop wrapper cut into a star and other stuff to reenact the theme song. (Ethan)
  • Pretty much every time we street contacted we tried to break the ice with a joke and it got pretty creative and hilarious. Needless to say we found out a good way to get people interested in what you have to say is make them laugh! (Sydney)

What was a crazy/dangerous experience?

  • When I almost killed myself testing out a plug for a dryer. (Ethan)
  • Once in Phoenix I was riding my bike and got separated from my companion and held down at gun point then for some reason the guy dropped his gun and ran away. My companion caught up to me and I was terrified. (Sydney)

What was a spiritual experience?

  • Being able to give the Priesthood to one of my favorite converts. (Ethan)
  • I loved companion study every day. Every day there were so many miracles and spiritual experiences it’s hard to recall just one. Teaching the first lesson was always really spiritual for me and confirmed my testimony of the restoration of the gospel every time. (Sydney)

What are some interesting facts about the Scottsdale Mission?

  • If you do what you’re supposed to your faith will grow and you’ll understand more about the Gospel and not only how it works, but why it works the way it does. (Ethan)
  • There are two way different extreme climates. The mountains are cold and snowy and the valley is so so so hot. If the mission president likes you he will send you to the mountains for the Sumer and the valley for the winter hahaha! But there are also a lot of different cultures in the mission: Native American, I taught in Portuguese, Spanish, my companions taught in French and Korean, so the people you meet are interesting! (Sydney)

What was the weather like?

  • Hot and dry and annoying. (Ethan)
  • Very hot in the valley. But it does get chilly in the winter at night time especially if you’re on bike. In the mountains it snows in the winter and gets very cold. (Sydney)

Any things you really like about the area/people?

  • Love the people!! They were very nice (the ones that knew us and liked us). I loved the scenery. (Ethan)
  • I just loved them as soon as I met them. Heavenly Father really blessed you with an enormous capacity to love and serve who ever you come in contact with. (Sydney)

Any packing/clothing advice?

  • Bring more Garments. Enough for 10 days at least. Bring lots of socks!!! White shirts and pants are easy and make sure you get machine washable or you’re going to hate watching them get dirty and it’s going to not be fun getting them cleaned all the time. (Ethan)
  • Don’t over pack. Remember you can always buy clothes on p-day and you will want to because you get so tired of the clothes you have! We usually stopped at thrift stores and got really creative with our outfits. Don’t bring stuff like big bottles of shampoo or lotion or stuff- people can mail it to you or you can buy it. Use your 50 pound luggage weight limit on clothes and journals and that kind of stuff. (Sydney)

What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?

  • Understanding. (Ethan)
  • It was mostly just a ton of fun. I learned to apply to gospel into my every day life. I learned to communicate with the savior through the Holy Ghost. I finally learned what it really meant to have the gift of the Holy Ghost. A huge blessing was that I got to go through the temple to take my endowments out. I learned the value of teamwork and leadership. Every aspect of my life has been blessed because of my service as a missionary. I know the people I served won’t remember me after a while but their faces are engraved on my heart not a day goes by that I don’t remember them and the feelings we felt together and the lessons we learned. (Sydney)

What are some skills you gained?

  • Talking to people in a friendly, fun conversation. Being able to organize a schedule and be more aware of life around me. (Ethan)
  • Talking to people, making people laugh, my ability to study improved so much! I learned how to be a good teacher, how to plan and prepare how to set goals and push myself. Name any aspect of my life and I will tell you how my mission helped me improve that skill. (Sydney)

What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?

  • Organization of the mission. How it works. (Ethan)
  • I wish I had gone into the mission with no expectations. After watching the preach my gospel videos I had certain expectations of what I thought was the normal procedure to be trained as a missionary. Well nothing was normal about my training. My first transfer I was companions with another sister straight out of the MTC. We were both clueless and stressed because we were not expecting that. As the transfer went on we let go of those expectations and were able to find ourselves as missionaries. I needed to learn to trust in the Lord’s training program and plan and not my own. (Sydney)

Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Scottsdale?

  • Let the mission change you. Give up your will. You’re not the important one anymore. Let go of your desires and focus more on what the people want. It doesn’t matter where you want to go or who you want to be with. It matters what you have to get done and how you do it. Be smart, be in tune, and be prepared to handle anything the Right way. If you’re being obedient you will always be prompted to do the right thing whether you are able to recognize it right away or not. Don’t be one of those missionaries who whines and complains about your companion or your area. Just deal with it and make a difference instead of trying to shrug it off. (Ethan)
  • Be open minded. Trust your mission president, trust your companion, and trust the Lord. The first week I was in the mission field I wrote in my journal that I was worried I’d be the only missionary to return hating their mission. It was that hard at first. But as I let go of my plan and trusted in the Lord with no fear and no doubt He created a beautiful experience for me. I’ve been home a year and a half and not a single moment passes where I’m not smiling thinking of some aspect of my mission. It defined and shaped my testimony. If you put the work in, the Lord will teach you every day of your mission and every day after your mission as you live worthy to learn of him and his blessings. I know the gospel was restored by Joseph Smith. And each time I testify of it I feel the truth burn inside of me again. The priesthood is restored. We are children of God. Keep your love for the Savior at the helm of your mission and you will work miracles and it will change you. (Sydney)

What was a funny language mistake?

  • When I changed from Portuguese-speaking to Spanish-speaking no one could understand me so my companion started telling people I was from Brazil then they were more patient with my poor Spanish! Haha I’m not from Brazil and my Portuguese was just as bad as my Spanish haha but it got better. (Sydney)
