(Ricardo)
  • Went to teach a man who was drunk when we arrived. He said he wanted our help to quit so I asked him where he kept all his wine, took all the bottles and walked outside and broke them one by one. He tried to stop me and started crying but afterwards hugged me and thanked me! (Dustin)

What was a crazy experience?

  • I was training an Elder who had recently completed two weeks in the mission field. We were walking down, and we could see some feet sticking out of the dumpster ahead of us. The man inside got out, saw us, and started yelling in Spanish, “Get off my land!!” After he said this, he ran full speed up to us, stopped in front of my companion, and again yelled “get off my land” in my companions face. He then turned to me and said tell something about God or I’ll kill you. I don’t remember what I said, but he couldn’t understand my gringo accent very well. So he gave up and walked away. (Garett)
(Ricardo)
  • I honestly never felt that I was in danger. It is a pretty safe place. (Dustin)

What was a spiritual experience?

  • I had member in my second area named Maria, a recent convert of 2 months. We usually stopped by several times a week to see how she and her family of 5 were doing since she was also single and loved the company and the gospel lessons. She always greeted us with a smile. One day we knocked on her door and she looked really down about something, we asked what the matter was. She said her 22 year old son had suddenly ran off, and left his wife and kid without telling anyone. She was really distressed. We shared a message about sincere prayer and invited her to pray personally and as a family. She agreed. We left and sincerely prayed for the well being of her family. We dropped by the next day, knocked, and to our surprise she greeted us with that smile we had known before. She immediate began telling us that after our discussion and invitation, she and her kids prayed, she then made dinner, and after dinner and everything was cleaned up, she heard a knock at the door. One of her daughters had not gotten back from a friend’s house, so it must have been her. To her surprise it was her son who had run off!! She asked him why he decided to come back. He said, ” because I felt that my Mother needed me.” Maria’s and my testimony of prayer had been strengthened immensely. (Garett)
(Ricardo)
  • Wow, every day. The key with Chileans is love. If they can tell you care about them they will do anything for you. (Dustin)

What are some interesting facts about the Osorno Mission?

  • It is absolutely beautiful!! The Patagonia borders the southern half of the mission. There are a lot of national parks with thousands of lakes and rivers. There is also the most friendliest and humble of people. (Garett)
  • The southernmost mission of the world. (Dustin)

What was the weather like?

  • Rains everyday! (Emily)
  • Rainy most days. Bring a good rain jacket, you won’t regret it. It rarely got over 90 degrees and was colder than 30. (Garett)
(Ricardo)
  • One of the rainiest places on earth but only snows in the mountains generally. Very nice in the summer with long warm days. Winter days are short and humid. (Dustin)

Any things you really like about the area/people?

  • The place is absolutely beautiful. Everything is so green and lush. The people are spectacular as well, they will talk your ear off, haha. They cook a lot of food. (Garett)
(Ricardo)
  • The people are wonderful and the scenery in southern Chile is incredible. (Dustin)

Any packing/clothing advice?

  • Sisters should bring a lot of tights/leggings and warm boots. (Emily)
  • Bring waterproof shoes. A good rain jacket that has a zip out liner, some days it will be rainy but also humid and warm, or sometimes cold, so I would recommend a jacket with a zip it liner. Thermals would be a good idea, I wore underarmor. A waterproof backpack, your scriptures will get damp regardless but they won’t get soaked. Last but not least, don’t forget your smile, because Chileans will always give a smile back!! (Garett)
(Ricardo)
  • Good raincoat and the strongest umbrella you can find. Good walking shoes that can take a beating. Don’t wear a suitcoat often, but will go through many pants. If you wear large size shoes(12+) they are not available in Chile so bring extra. (Dustin)

What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?

  • A better understanding of people and all of life’s questions can be answered by the gospel of Christ. A refined character, it’s two years to take off the natural man and think mainly of others and not yourself. Most of all a more profound self conversion and testimony. (Garett)
(Ricardo)
  • Best experience of my life, 30+ years later and I still use things I learned every day.  (Dustin)

What are some skills you gained?

  • Cooking healthy meals. Starting a conversation with someone, and leaving with a new friend. Not judging too quickly about anyone. (Garett)
(Ricardo)
  • Language, I use Spanish frequently plus many leadership skills. (Dustin)

What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?

  • I wish I knew more about the apostasy and the restoration of the gospel. I had an idea of what it was all about, but until I was in the MTC, I had finally understood why priesthood authority and why it separates us from every other church was so important. (Garett)
(Ricardo)
  • That missions are hard work and not all missionaries are there for the right reasons. (Dustin)

Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Osorno?

  • While in the MTC there was a TV that always had the quote of the day written in it. One day we were in going to an assembly and I glanced over at the TV and saw two words that Elder Bednar said, ” Be yourself.” That’s exactly what a mission is, to be your best self. No one is perfect at teaching or studying, the Lord has prepared you throughout your lifetime to go to the place you are to serve and be character of a person he has, as the scriptures say, “suffered” you to be. There are great things that lay in store for you. And most of all, learn how to balance having fun and working hard. (Garett)
(Ricardo)
  • Learn to work and don’t bring along any unnecessary baggage (girlfriends, past sins). (Dustin)

What was a funny language mistake?

  • Embarazada does not mean embarrassed, it means pregnant. A sister missionary was called on to speak in a new area and proceeded to tell the ward she was very pregnant and it was the Bishop’s fault! (Dustin)
