  • Golden Questioned a child in the yard which led to the invitation of grandma to return later that evening to teach her whole family who were baptized two weeks later. The two older brothers were in the priesthood and donated money to an activity that they did not have to attend. Awesome! (Reaine)

What are some interesting facts about the Tijuana Mission?

  • Todo Tijuana, Mexicali, San Felipe su gente. (Alonso)
  • Arturo de Hoyos, our Mission President, tried a new concept – a battalion. The Mormon Battalion. Twenty-two missionaries in a branch. One month to find and one month to baptize. Least amount of baptisms stayed behind to help teach members how to retain. When I left for medical reasons, there were 5 battalions. The first one was in San Luis. (Reaine)

Any things you really like about the area/people?

  • If you are from the Midwest, be prepared for no humidity. It is dry. The people were awesome. Members or not. I ate 5 times a day. (Reaine)

  • The ability to read, write and speak the Spanish language. I have been teaching high school Spanish for 16 years and this year I teach elementary Spanish grades one through five. I also learned the ability to speak to people and I have the people skills necessary to do my job. (Reaine)

What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?

  • Que disfruten este tiempo. (Alonso)
  • Nothing different. It was a great learning experience. I left my mission with the gold that I was going to learn the language and I was going to sound like a native speaker. I did it. (Reaine)

Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Tijuana?

  • La mision es bella y aprovechen su time no lo pierdan y gozen de esa bella experiencia y encuentren a sus amigos. (Alonso)
  • Enjoy the language. The people want you to learn it and they want you to speak it and they will teach you if you just asked for help. Don’t be embarrassed to speak or make mistakes when you’re speaking the language. Trust in the people you work with… trust in the people that you come across and I hope that all is well with the Lord. (Reaine)

What was a funny language mistake?

  • Chilango y uno propio. (Alonso)
  • It wasn’t really a mistake, but the family we lived with for the first time, mom thought it was funny that I was using my hands to ask how do you say this. Paid off in the end. (Reaine)
